who's this guy?

Hello there! I'm so glad you have arrived here. My name's Carré and I'm a marketing leader who has always had a keen interest in mental health, mindset and resilience. Over my 18-year marketing career, I've seen what immense pressure and change looks like, and I've also seen how it can affect our mental health and well-being.

To be honest, I'm worried about the long-term effects that this pressure is having on my colleagues and friends in the industry, so I decided to launch Resilient Marketing Minds. We all have the skills to do amazing work, but do we have the mindset? Do we have the resilience to keep moving forward when things don't go our way?

It's my ambition to make sure that we do. I hope you'll take some time to explore the opportunities with me.

my personal story

I'm an Aussie, born in Tokyo, now living in Canada, and married to a wonderful woman who grew up in former Yugoslavia. I have also spent most of my career in the travel industry, which has allowed me the opportunity to see a lot of the world.

All of this exposure to new places and people has given me a certain perspective on life that I'm extremely proud of. I know fully well the value of being open to new ideas and perspectives. In fact, one of my favourite sayings is that "your perspective can either be a passport or a prison".

I love to look at situations from all angles, and perhaps that is what drew me to marketing in the first place – the idea of solving problems for others, requiring me to put myself in their shoes.

I admit that I've been extremely lucky in life - both of my parents are healthy and still together, and I was raised in a household that emphasized the values that I discuss a lot here. I grew up with two parents who openly practiced meditation, yoga and breathing exercises before it was in vogue. We’d discuss how the brain works at the breakfast table, and why we feel certain emotions over dinner.

I never take this privilege for granted. In fact, Resilient Marketing Minds is an opportunity to share some of the ideas that I have been exposed to over the years. I'm happy to share how I have put them into real-life practice as a marketing leader, husband, and father.

marketing experience

I started my marketing career in 2006 in Australia with an entry-level position for a huge travel company based in Brisbane. That foot in the door opened up into a wonderful career, sending me across Australia before I earned the opportunity to move to Vancouver to lead a huge team of amazing marketeers.

I now lead a team of Content Creators and Designers across 5 continents. We are responsible for the output for two major brands that collectively manage $10B worth of travel globally.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked on over a dozen different brands, experienced both B2C and B2B worlds, led teams of up to 29 professionals, managed huge budgets, and had experience working across more than ten international markets. My favourite part of it all? Meeting and collaborating with a diverse group of people to get creative and solve challenging problems.

the why

They say life wasn't meant to be easy....and they were right! It's a struggle out there and, despite plenty of things going right in the world right now, many of us are doing it tough. The mental health statistics of almost every major Western country are staggering, and for those of us in the marketing, advertising and creative industries, the pressure is at an all-time high.

Three quick stats to digest:

  1. 46% of the marketing industry display mild to severe levels of anxiety (33% moderate to extremely severe)

  2. Marketers under 29 years old seem to be 1.5x more likely to show signs of depression than respondents over 40

  3. The number one stressor is the pressure we place on ourselves to perform

** This information was based on surveys conducted in 2022 with professionals from the creative, media, and marketing industries. The results are based on almost 5,000 responses and over 200,000 data points**

Some of us handle the pressure better than others, but many of us are in a constant battle to manage it all. I've personally come to embrace the notion that acknowledging life's inherent difficulties enhances our ability to bear (and even enjoy) it. While we may not all possess the innate ability to navigate every obstacle life throws our way, there exists a range of strategies and tools at our disposal, provided we know where to look and how to utilize them. If our ambition is to build fortitude, thrive and get to the next level, then we must prioritize these tools and strategies.

I’ve been navigating this journey for a over a decade myself, and it’s been both challenging and rewarding. The foundation of this progression is resilience - a trait I strive to cultivate within myself and instil in my sons.

My ambition is to hopefully help a few marketing and creative professionals as well!
